What Can an Oral Surgeon Do for Me?

There are many services that an oral surgeon can provide. Whether you have impacted teeth or an overbite, oral surgery can help correct these problems. An oral surgeon can also help treat cancer in the mouth and other nearby locations. Read on to learn more about what an oral surgeon can do for you.

Removing impacted teeth

Wisdom teeth are the types of teeth that are most often impacted. However, other teeth can also become impacted. An oral surgeon can remove these teeth in a relatively simple procedure. After numbing the area with anesthesia, the oral surgeon will cut the gumline to expose the teeth. The surgeon will then use a tool to firmly grasp the tooth and rock it back and forth until it is loosened. In some cases, the tooth will need to be removed in pieces.

Correcting overbite or underbite

Sometimes, the teeth do not align properly. Many times, an orthodontist can correct this through braces or other orthodontic appliances. But in some cases, the overbite or underbite is related to jaw problems. In this case, an oral surgeon can perform surgery on the jaw to move it to the right position.

Treating cancer

An oral surgeon can help with the treatment of oral cancers. Oral surgeons can also help treat cancers in other areas, including the sinuses, the throat, the salivary glands, the lips, and the larynx. There are several other things that oral surgeons can help treat as well. These include:

  • Nerve problems
  • Lesions removal from the mouth
  • Cleft palate or cleft lips surgery

Fixing breathing issues during sleep

Certain types of sleeping conditions, such as snoring or sleep apnea, can be fixed through oral surgery. In sleep apnea, the patient stops breathing during the night. This happens when the airway becomes blocked.

A continuous positive airway pressure machine (CPAP) can help sleep apnea in some cases. However, if the airway is too small, oral surgery can be used to enlarge it. Oral surgery can also help to adjust part of the nasal passages or the mouth.

Jaw surgery

If a patient has jaw problems, orthodontics cannot always fix them. This is where oral surgery comes in. If the teeth do not properly meet, oral surgery may be necessary to move the jawbone. If the lips do not properly close, jaw surgery may be necessary.

A dentist may also recommend jaw surgery if the patient is suffering from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. The condition can be caused by bruxism, or teeth grinding. It can also be caused by trauma to the joint. This condition can cause severe pain in the jaw. To relieve this intense pain, jaw surgery may be necessary.

Visit an oral surgeon

If you are suffering from any of these problems, a dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon. The oral surgeon can help treat problems ranging from impacted teeth to underbites. Oral surgeons can also treat cancer and help breathing problems. Visit an oral surgeon for a consultation.
